Requirement:

  • Must be a current student in the Industrial & Systems Engineering or Industrial Engineering Technology student.
  • Internship begins in January 2026 and is likely to be 6-8 weeks.
  • Must have previous experience identifying, documenting processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to present findings to plant manager and Executive Team.

Role Overview:


This internship is designed for an Industrial & Systems Engineering (ISE) or Industrial Engineering Technology student looking to apply classroom knowledge in a hands-on manufacturing environment. The intern will serve as a bridge between engineering concepts and shop-floor practices, working directly with machine operators, supervisors, and leadership to understand how products move through our facility.


What you will provide and the experience you will gain: exposure to real-world applications of:

  • Process mapping - documenting how work flows between departments, equipment, and people.
  • Time and motion studies - gathering data to measure efficiency, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements.
  • Standardization of work - developing SOPs and visual aids that provide clarity and reduce variability across shifts.
  • Continuous improvement practices - learning to spot inefficiencies and propose changes aligned with lean principles.
  • Change management - collaborating with floor staff to ensure documentation is practical, accurate, and adopted.


This role is ideal for students who want to see the direct impact of engineering methods on operations, while building a strong foundation in technical writing, workflow analysis, and applied industrial engineering.


Key Responsibilities:


The Process Engineering Intern will:


Process Observation & Mapping:

  • Shadow operators and supervisors to understand each stage of production (cutting, printing, packing, shipping).
  • Create process flow diagrams and workflow maps to visualize how products move through the plant.
  • Identify dependencies, handoffs, and potential bottlenecks in current processes.


Documentation Development:

  • Translate observations into step-by-step SOPs and work instructions that are clear, concise, and accessible to floor staff.
  • Incorporate visual aids (diagrams, photos, checklists) where possible to improve usability.
  • Establish a standard format and structure for documentation to ensure consistency across departments.


Data Collection & Analysis:

  • Conduct time and motion studies to benchmark current production cycle times.
  • Collect operational data to identify variability in performance across operators or shifts.
  • Analyze findings to highlight inefficiencies or areas where standardization would drive improvements.


Collaboration & Validation:

  • Partner with production staff to validate accuracy of SOPs and ensure instructions align with real-world practices.
  • Adjust documentation based on operator feedback to ensure practicality.
  • Work with supervisors to implement updates and recommend process controls for future revisions.


Process Improvement Support:

  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste, improve flow, or eliminate redundant steps.
  • Make recommendations for training materials that can enhance new employee onboarding.
  • Support leadership in creating a documentation control system to manage revisions and maintain up-to-date SOPs.
